
Students of Deepika Ispat Sikhya Sadan (DISS), the free school established by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and managed by Deepika Mahila Sanghati for the underprivileged children have won the prestigious Rajya Puraskar in Scouts and Guides for the second consecutive year. On 29th of March 2017 in a function organized at Raj Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, His Excellency Mr. S. C. Jamir, the Hon’ble Governor of Odisha, presented the Rajya Puraskar certificates for Scouts and Guides to 21 students of DISS.
The Rajya Puraskar came as a recognition of the contributions made by the Scout and Guide children in the society. The children were actively involved in creating awareness on diseases like Japanese Encephalitis, Blood Donation Camp at Rourkela Institute of Management, Chhend, cloth distribution on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti at Rourkela Railway Station, spreading brotherhood through Raksha Bandhan, rag picking and other activities under Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, observance of Women Safety Day in association with Youth Hostel Association of India and extending assistance in the camp held for the differently abled.
Among the 21 recipients of the certificates, there were 11 Guides and 10 scout students, all at present student of Class X of the current academic year. The certificate will give the students additional weightage at the time of admission for higher studies and other career related opportunities. The Rajya Purskar Certificates are given to those who have successfully completed the different advancement stage of Scout and Guide training such as Pravesh, Pratham Sopan, Dwitya Sopan and Tritya Sopan.
The students were accompanied by their trained Guide Captain Ms Lakshmi Sahoo. and the Basic Scout Master Trainer, Mr. Sribatsha Samal, Assistant Teacher of the school. The school aims to receive Rashtrapati Puraskar and bring many more children under the ambit of the Scouts and Guide activities so to develop the inherent potential of the youngsters and groom them as worthy citizens of the Nation.
It is worth mentioning here that, in an endeavour to bring about a holistic development of the underprivileged children of Industrial Township Deepika Ispat Sikhya Sadan (DISS), a free school was established in the year 2007 by Rourkela Steel Plant. Ever since the students of the school have been proving their mettle in both academic and extracurricular activities by participating in state as well as national level competitions.
