In-house upgradation of equipment of Rourkela Steel Plant leads to savings of Rs. 51 crores

The enterprising employees of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have upgraded the WG-6, 7 & 8 Roll Grinding Machine of Roll Shop – II by using in-house resources leading to  substantial  savings of Rs. 51 crores.  The upgraded Machine was recently inaugurated in Cold Rolling Mill Complex by Mr. Subhendra Das, ED (Works) in the presence of Mr. Paramananda Sahoo, ED (MM).
It is worth mentioning that Roll Shop caters to the requirement of Ready Roll Assemblies to all customer mills namely Plate Mill, Hot Strip Mill, Cold Rolling Mill and Silicon Steel Mill. WG 6, 7 & 8 - Roll grinding machine is used for grinding work rolls of Tandem Mill and Sinter Plant-III.
Because of years of wear and tear the machine was unable to function at 100 percent of its rated capacity. This led to wastage and inferior quality of rolls. To overcome the  problems a group of employees from Roll Shop and Cold Rolling Mill carried out a number of modifications.
The upgradation has led to direct one time financial benefits worth more than Rs. 51 crores. Besides, there have been several intangible benefits  like precise and accurate control of machine operating parameters, easy and safe operation, enhanced life  of the machines by at least 10 to 12 years, increased machine availability from average 85 % to more than 98% and timely fulfilment of requirement of CRM complex, with respect to quality and quantity.
